Air conditioning in Tring

We install, service and repair air conditioning in Tring and the villages around it, from Aldbury and Wigginton on the hills to Long Marston and Wilstone in the vale. Here's how the town's Rothschild-era buildings, its conservation area and Dacorum's rules shape an install.

Of 63,413 households in the 2021 Census, 76 in 100 lived in a house (21 detached, 25 semi-detached, 30 terraced) and 23 in 100 in a flat. Most installs here are on houses, where a back or side wall is usually the simplest place for the outdoor unit.

In a conservation area an outdoor unit can't go on a wall or roof facing a road without planning permission, and an Article 4 direction can remove permitted development rights altogether. Check your postcode to see whether either applies to your street.

A market town remade by the Rothschilds

Tring sits in the Tring Gap, a break in the Chiltern Hills. The council's 2019 conservation area appraisal traces its market to 1281 and its look to the Rothschild family, who owned Tring Park from 1872. Around 1900 the 2nd Lord Rothschild and his architect William Huckvale rebuilt much of the centre in hot red brick, black-and-white timber framing and tile hanging.

Walter Rothschild's Zoological Museum on Park Street, built between 1899 and 1913, was left to the British Museum (Natural History) by the 3rd Lord Rothschild and is now part of the Natural History Museum. Tring Park Mansion is now Tring Park School for the Performing Arts. After the Second World War most new housing went north of the High Street, out towards the Icknield Way.

Tring homes and what they mean for an install

Planning: Dacorum Borough Council

Planning in Tring goes to Dacorum Borough Council, not to the town council. A heating-capable outdoor unit on a house is often permitted development if it is not used only for cooling, is no bigger than 1.5 m³ and passes the MCS 020(a) noise check of 37 dB(A) at neighbours' windows. Our planning guide sets out the rest.

The Tring conservation area was designated in October 1969 and reviewed in 1978 and 2019. It is wedge-shaped and covers the historic south of the town: the High Street and Western Road, Park Street and Park Road, from Brook Street in the east to where Western Road meets Park Road. Inside it, a unit can't go on a wall or roof facing the road without permission.

Dacorum lists Article 4 directions on a few High Street houses, on Hamilton House, Kosicote and Hope Cottages on King Street, and on two houses on Park Road, plus pieces of land near Miswell Lane, the Icknield Way and Kiln Road. The council says its directions mainly cover minor changes such as porches, windows, doors and painting, so ask whether yours touches an outdoor unit.

The villages around Tring

Aldbury's conservation area dates from 1968, and Tring Station, two miles east of the town, is in Aldbury parish. The four Tring Reservoirs, two miles north, were built to feed the canal at its summit. They have been a nature reserve since 1955.

Long Marston and Wilstone have conservation areas from 1968, and both were amended in February 2026 with new appraisals, so check the latest maps. Wigginton, up on the ridge, is in the Chilterns National Landscape. All of these villages are in Dacorum.

Shops, offices and parking

We fit and look after air conditioning in High Street shops, cafes, pubs, salons, clinics and offices, and in units on the town's industrial estate. Wall units suit small shops. Ceiling cassettes suit offices with suspended ceilings. Commercial installs are done in business hours.

Dacorum runs two controlled parking zones here: the Brook Street area (zone J), Monday to Saturday 8am to 6pm, and Tring Station (zone T), every day 8am to 6pm. If you live in one, tell us when you book and we'll agree where the van can unload.

Tring questions

Do I need planning permission for air conditioning in Tring?

Often not, if the unit also heats and meets the size, position and noise limits. You need permission for a listed building, a cooling-only unit, or a unit on a wall facing the road in the Tring conservation area or a village conservation area. Applications go to Dacorum Borough Council.

I live in a Rothschild-era house on Park Road. Can I have air conditioning?

Usually, yes, with care. Park Road is in the conservation area, two houses there have Article 4 directions, and some buildings nearby are listed. We look for a rear or side position, keep the pipework hidden, and help you prepare any application before we book the install.

Can you cool a small cottage in the west of town?

Yes. A 2.5 kW wall unit suits most cottage bedrooms, from £1,850 including VAT. Where a wall unit won't fit, a floor-standing console starts from £2,350. The outdoor unit usually goes in the rear yard.

Do you cover Aldbury and Wigginton?

Yes. Both are in Dacorum and in the Chilterns National Landscape, and Aldbury also has a conservation area. We check your address and listing status first, then plan a low, screened spot for the outdoor unit.

How much is air conditioning for a Tring shop or office?

Commercial wall units start from £1,795 plus VAT and ceiling cassettes from £2,750 plus VAT. We fit in business hours and can take over servicing from another installer.

My air conditioning isn't working. Can you help?

Yes. We repair most brands, whoever fitted them. We confirm the cost of the repair visit when you book, and the repair itself is priced in writing before any work starts. If refrigerant is low, we find and fix the leak before any regas.
