Air conditioning in Berkhamsted

We install, service and repair air conditioning in Berkhamsted, Northchurch and the villages up on the Chiltern ridge. More than a dozen Berkhamsted streets have Article 4 directions, so here's how they, the conservation area and the town's homes shape an install.

Of 63,413 households in the 2021 Census, 76 in 100 lived in a house (21 detached, 25 semi-detached, 30 terraced) and 23 in 100 in a flat. Most installs here are on houses, where a back or side wall is usually the simplest place for the outdoor unit.

In a conservation area an outdoor unit can't go on a wall or roof facing a road without planning permission, and an Article 4 direction can remove permitted development rights altogether. Check your postcode to see whether either applies to your street.

A castle town in the Bulbourne valley

Berkhamsted grew in a narrow valley where the River Bulbourne, the Grand Union Canal and the railway run side by side. English Heritage dates the castle to about 1070, when Robert of Mortain built a timber motte and bailey. The council's conservation area report notes a royal charter for the town in 1156.

The canal reached the town by 1798 and the London to Birmingham railway opened in 1838. After that the town spread out from its long High Street: rows of terraces near the station and the canal, and larger Victorian and Edwardian villas climbing the hillside to the south-west.

Berkhamsted homes and what they mean for an install

Planning: Dacorum Borough Council

Planning in Berkhamsted is handled by Dacorum Borough Council. A heating-capable outdoor unit on a house is often permitted development if it is not used only for cooling, is no bigger than 1.5 m³ and passes the MCS 020(a) noise check of 37 dB(A) at neighbours' windows. A semi-detached or terraced house can have one heat pump, a detached house two. Our planning guide has the rest.

The Berkhamsted conservation area was designated in March 1969 and amended in 1994, 2014 and 2016. The council's report splits it into three character areas: the High Street, the Grand Union Canal (with the castle, the station and the George Street housing) and the Charles Street area of Victorian and Edwardian houses. Inside it, a unit can't go on a wall or roof facing the road without permission.

Streets with Article 4 directions

Dacorum lists Article 4 directions on these Berkhamsted streets, all inside the conservation area. The council says its directions remove rights over minor changes such as porches, replacement windows and doors and painting the outside. Ask the council whether the one on your house covers an outdoor unit.

  • Boxwell Road, Cowper Road, Clarence Road and Station Road
  • Charles Street, Chapel Street and Hamilton Road
  • Kitsbury Road and Kitsbury Terrace
  • Shrublands Avenue and Shrublands Road
  • Parts of the High Street, including Camilla Terrace and Sibdon Place
  • Lock Cottage on Ravens Lane

Northchurch and the villages

Northchurch runs on from the west end of the High Street and has its own conservation area, designated in 1969, and so has the hamlet of Dudswell. Potten End's conservation area dates from 1997 and Little Gaddesden's from 1968, and Little Gaddesden House has its own Article 4 direction. All are in Dacorum.

Ashley Green, just south-west of the town, is over the county line in Buckinghamshire, so planning there goes to Buckinghamshire Council.

Shops, offices and parking

We fit and service air conditioning in High Street shops, cafes, salons, clinics and offices, and in workspaces on the town's former industrial sites. Wall units suit small shops. Ceiling cassettes suit offices with suspended ceilings. Commercial installs are done in business hours, and in the conservation area we start with the siting.

Dacorum runs a controlled parking zone at Elm Grove (zone F), every day from 8am to 8pm. The council's own report notes that parking is difficult in the older streets near the canal, where few houses have garages. Tell us when you book and we'll plan where the van can unload the outdoor unit.

Berkhamsted questions

Do I need planning permission for air conditioning in Berkhamsted?

Often not, if the unit also heats and meets the size, position and noise limits. You need permission for a listed building, a cooling-only unit, or a unit on a wall facing the road inside the conservation area. Many streets also have Article 4 directions. Applications go to Dacorum Borough Council.

My house is on Shrublands Avenue. What should I check?

Shrublands Avenue has an Article 4 direction and sits in the conservation area. Dacorum's directions mainly cover things like windows, doors, porches and painting, but check what yours covers. Either way, a unit facing the road needs permission, so a rear or side position is the usual answer.

Can you fit air conditioning in a canal-side terrace near the station?

Usually, yes. The outdoor unit goes on the back wall or a small ground pad, with pipes through the wall behind the indoor unit. Parking can be tight on these streets, so we plan the van's spot when you book. A bedroom starts from £1,850 including VAT.

How much is air conditioning for three bedrooms in a Victorian villa?

A multi-split cools three rooms from one outdoor unit, from £5,100 including VAT. Two rooms start from £3,650. We survey the pipe routes first, because high ceilings and thick walls change the best layout.

Do you cover Northchurch and Potten End?

Yes. Both are in Dacorum, so the same council handles planning. Each has its own conservation area, and Potten End is in the Chilterns National Landscape, so we check your address before we quote.

Do you service and repair existing systems?

Yes. An annual service starts at £119 including VAT, plus £59 for each extra indoor unit on the same visit. We repair most brands, whoever fitted them, and confirm the cost of the repair visit when you book.
