Of 58,990 households in the 2021 Census, 76 in 100 lived in a house (26 detached, 30 semi-detached, 20 terraced) and 23 in 100 in a flat. Most installs here are on houses, where a back or side wall is usually the simplest place for the outdoor unit.

In a conservation area an outdoor unit can't go on a wall or roof facing a road without planning permission, and an Article 4 direction can remove permitted development rights altogether. Check your postcode to see whether either applies to your street.

From a stop on the Watford road to a village

The St Stephen Neighbourhood Plan describes Chiswell Green a hundred years ago as little more than a stop on the road between Watford and St Albans, with farms around it. Its centre was the blacksmith's workshop, later an alehouse and today the Grade II listed Three Hammers pub, which still sits beside the village's post office and pharmacy.

Most of the village was built between the 1950s and the 1970s, in a long line beside the B4360 Watford Road, the way into St Albans from the M1 and M25. Chiswell Green Lane runs west past riding stables and the headquarters of the Royal Entomological Society, and Greenwood Park, with the parish community centre, lies on the eastern edge.

Planning: St Albans council and the St Stephen Neighbourhood Plan

Chiswell Green is in St Stephen parish, with Bricket Wood, Park Street and How Wood. Planning applications go to St Albans City and District Council, whose Local Plan, adopted in September 2026, calls it a medium-sized village. The St Stephen Neighbourhood Plan was made on 20 July 2022 after a referendum in May, and is used alongside the council's policies when applications are decided.

A heating-capable outdoor unit on a house is often permitted development, so no application is needed, if it isn't cooling-only, is no bigger than 1.5 m³ and passes the MCS 020(a) noise check of 37 dB(A) at neighbours' windows. It can't go on a wall facing a road above the ground floor. The village itself has no conservation area: the parish's two are at Old Bricket Wood and at Park Street and Frogmore.

How an install works for a Chiswell Green home

  1. Tell us about the rooms

Use the quote form or send photos on WhatsApp. We give you a guide price from our price list straight away.

  2. Survey

We visit, booked at least a week ahead, to measure the rooms, check the walls and plan the pipe run. The survey is free.

  3. Planning check

We check the unit's size, position and noise against Class G, and look for listed status, Article 4 directions or conditions on newer estates.

  4. Fitting day

A single wall unit with a 5 m pipe run is fitted in a day. The pipes go straight through the wall behind the indoor unit, so nothing shows inside.

  5. Handover and service

We show you the controls and register the warranty. An annual service, from £119 including VAT, keeps the manufacturer warranty valid.

Chiswell Green questions

Do I need planning permission for air conditioning in Chiswell Green?

Usually not for a house, if the unit also heats and meets the size, position and noise limits. You need permission for a cooling-only unit, a listed building, or a unit on a road-facing wall above the ground floor. Applications go to St Albans City and District Council.

Can I cool every bedroom in a 1960s semi?

Yes. A multi-split runs several rooms from one outdoor unit: two rooms from £3,650, three from £5,100 and four from £6,500, including VAT. On a semi the outdoor unit usually goes on the side wall or in the back garden.

I'm buying one of the new homes off Chiswell Green Lane. Can I add air conditioning?

Usually, once you've checked the planning permission. Some new estates come with conditions that remove permitted development rights, so ask the developer or check the decision notice. Send us the plot plan and we'll suggest where the outdoor unit can go.

Will my neighbours hear the outdoor unit?

Under permitted development, the unit must pass the MCS 020(a) noise check of 37 dB(A) at the neighbours' nearest window. We choose a position away from their bedrooms. A premium range unit, from £250 more, runs more quietly.

Is the Neighbourhood Plan a problem for air conditioning?

No. It guides the design of new buildings and extensions. A heat pump that meets the permitted development limits doesn't need an application at all. If yours does need one, for example for a cooling-only unit, the council will consider the Neighbourhood Plan along with its own policies.

Do you service and repair existing systems?

Yes. An annual service starts at £119 including VAT, plus £59 for each extra indoor unit on the same visit. We repair most brands, whoever fitted them, and confirm the cost of the repair visit when you book.
