Air conditioning in Brookmans Park
We install, service and repair air conditioning in Brookmans Park, Welham Green, Little Heath and the rest of North Mymms parish. Most homes in Brookmans Park are detached houses on wide, regular roads, so here's what that, Welwyn Hatfield's rules and the planned new homes mean for an install.

Of 46,209 households in the 2021 Census, 76 in 100 lived in a house (20 detached, 24 semi-detached, 32 terraced) and 23 in 100 in a flat. Most installs here are on houses, where a back or side wall is usually the simplest place for the outdoor unit.
In a conservation area an outdoor unit can't go on a wall or roof facing a road without planning permission, and an Article 4 direction can remove permitted development rights altogether. Check your postcode to see whether either applies to your street.

A village of detached houses by the Great North Road
The Welwyn Hatfield Local Plan describes Brookmans Park as a large village beside the old Great North Road, now the A1000, between Welham Green and Little Heath. Its streets are formal and regular, with mostly large detached houses at low density, and the village centre sits at its western end. The village has its own station on the East Coast Main Line.
Around it is a landscape of old estates. North Mymms Parish Council points to Gobions, once the park of Sir Thomas More, whose castellated gateway is known as The Folly, and to the Royal Veterinary College's Hawkshead Campus to the west. The house at North Mymms Park, in the parish, is listed grade I.
Brookmans Park homes and what they mean for an install
The ONS counts about 4,035 people in the Brookmans Park built-up area (Census 2021). About 59 per cent of homes are detached and 29 per cent semi-detached. Only 1 in 10 is a flat.
| Type of home | Where | What it means for the install |
|---|---|---|
| Large detached houses | Most of Brookmans Park and Little Heath | Two heat pumps are allowed under permitted development. A multi-split serves three or four rooms from one outdoor unit. |
| Semi-detached houses | Across Brookmans Park and much of Welham Green | One heat pump under permitted development, so a multi-split for several bedrooms, on a side wall or ground pad. |
| Terraces and flats | Mainly Welham Green | A rear position for terraces. For flats, freeholder consent first, and one heat pump per block under permitted development. |
Planning: Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council
Brookmans Park, Welham Green and Little Heath are all in Welwyn Hatfield, so planning goes to Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council. Little Heath joins on to Potters Bar and shares its EN6 postcode, but it is not in Hertsmere.
A heating-capable outdoor unit on a house is often permitted development if it is not used only for cooling, is no bigger than 1.5 m³ and passes the MCS 020(a) noise check of 37 dB(A) at neighbours' windows. A detached house can have two heat pumps, a semi or terrace one. Our planning guide has the rest.
None of the council's conservation areas covers Brookmans Park, Welham Green or Little Heath, so for most houses the noise check and a sensible position are what matter. In July 2026 the government announced that Welwyn Hatfield will become part of a new central Hertfordshire council from 1 April 2028, subject to Parliament.
New homes west of the station
The Welwyn Hatfield Local Plan 2016–2036, adopted in October 2023, allocates land west of Brookmans Park railway station (HS22) for about 428 homes and a new two-form-entry primary school. It can only go ahead once the extra primary school places are secured and a new pedestrian and cycle bridge over the railway has been agreed. The plan also asks for railway noise to be mitigated.
Two small sites off Golf Club Road (HS21 to the west and HS23 to the east) are allocated for about 24 homes between them. If you buy a new home on any of these sites, check its planning conditions before adding an outdoor unit.
Welham Green
Welham Green, the parish's other large village, is quite different. The Local Plan describes a varied mix of older and newer housing, its own station, and an established employment area on Travellers Lane, with Hatfield House park to the east. The ONS figures show more semis and terraces than Brookmans Park: about 41 per cent of homes are semi-detached and 30 per cent terraced.
The plan allocates land at Welham Manor and west of Station Road for about 84 homes, Dixons Hill Road for about 120, and the Marshmoor site for about 100 homes alongside new employment space. For a semi or terrace, one outdoor unit at the rear running a multi-split is the usual answer.
Little Heath, Water End and Bell Bar
North Mymms Parish Council covers Bell Bar, Brookmans Park, Little Heath, Bullens Green, Water End and Welham Green. Little Heath, the Local Plan says, is effectively a northern extension of Potters Bar, with detached housing at low density. Water End and Bell Bar are small places in the countryside around the villages. Any unit or pipe hole on a listed building needs listed building consent, so we check each address before we quote.
Businesses and install day
We fit and service air conditioning in the shops and offices in Brookmans Park and Welham Green, and in units on the Travellers Lane employment area. Ceiling cassettes suit offices with suspended ceilings; wall units suit shops and smaller rooms. Commercial installs are done in business hours.
If you have a drive, the van can usually park on it, close to where the outdoor unit goes. If not, or if you live near either station, tell us when you book and we'll plan where the van unloads.

Brookmans Park questions
Do I need planning permission for air conditioning in Brookmans Park?
Usually not, if the unit also heats and meets the size, position and noise limits. There is no conservation area in Brookmans Park, and a detached house can have two heat pumps under permitted development. You need permission for a cooling-only unit or a listed building. Applications go to Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council.
How would you air condition a five-bedroom detached house?
Usually with a multi-split for the bedrooms, from £6,500 including VAT for four rooms, and a separate unit for a large living room or open-plan kitchen from £2,450. Because the house is detached, two outdoor units are allowed under permitted development. We plan the pipe routes at the survey.
Can I have a slimmer, better-looking indoor unit?
Yes. Our design range, such as the Daikin Emura, Mitsubishi Electric Zen and LG Artcool, adds from £550 to the standard price. It suits living rooms where the unit is on show.
I live in Little Heath. Is that Hertsmere or Welwyn Hatfield?
Welwyn Hatfield. Little Heath joins on to Potters Bar and has an EN6 postcode, but it is in the Brookmans Park and Little Heath ward, so planning goes to Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council.
Do you cover Welham Green?
Yes. Welham Green is in the same parish and council. Homes there are more often semis and terraces, which can have one heat pump under permitted development, so we usually suggest a multi-split from one outdoor unit at the rear.
Do you service and repair existing systems?
Yes. An annual service starts at £119 including VAT, plus £59 for each extra indoor unit on the same visit. We repair most brands, whoever fitted them, and confirm the cost of the repair visit when you book.
