Air conditioning in Hertford

We install, service and repair air conditioning in homes and businesses across Hertford, from Bengeo and Folly Island to Sele Farm and Hertford Heath. A large part of the county town is in one conservation area, and below we explain what that means for an outdoor unit, street by street.

Of 62,022 households in the 2021 Census, 80 in 100 lived in a house (28 detached, 30 semi-detached, 22 terraced) and 20 in 100 in a flat. Most installs here are on houses, where a back or side wall is usually the simplest place for the outdoor unit.

In a conservation area an outdoor unit can't go on a wall or roof facing a road without planning permission, and an Article 4 direction can remove permitted development rights altogether. Check your postcode to see whether either applies to your street.

A county town where four rivers meet

East Herts Council's District Plan describes Hertford as the county town, lying where four rivers meet in a valley, among them the Lea, the Beane and the Mimram. Green open spaces such as Hartham Common, which the council calls Green Fingers, still reach towards the centre.

The council's 2017 appraisal of the Hertford conservation area counts nearly 280 listed building groups inside it. Three are Grade I: the Hertford Castle gatehouse, Shire Hall on Fore Street and St Leonard's Church. Around the medieval core, most streets are late Victorian and Edwardian terraces and villas in yellow or red brick with slate roofs.

Hertford homes and what they mean for an install

Type of homeTypical streetsWhat it means for the install

Planning: East Herts Council

Planning applications in Hertford go to East Herts Council, which has its offices at Wallfields on Pegs Lane. A heat pump that also heats is often permitted development on a house, so no application is needed if every limit is met: it isn't used only for cooling, it's no bigger than 1.5 m³, and it passes the MCS 020(a) noise check of 37 dB(A) at neighbours' windows. A terraced or semi-detached house can have one, a detached house two.

The Hertford conservation area was first designated in 1967 and revised in 1981 and 1996. The 2017 appraisal splits it into six areas: the historic core, Bengeo and Port Vale, St Leonard's and Folly Island, All Saints and Queens Road, County Hall and West Street, and Ware Road with the streets by Hertford East station. Inside it, a unit can't go on a wall or roof facing the road without permission.

When we checked in October 2026, the council listed Article 4 directions only for Bishop's Stortford. The Hertford appraisal suggests them for selected houses in future, so we check your address again before we quote. Listed buildings always need listed building consent.

New homes around the town

The council's 2018 District Plan set out at least 950 new homes for Hertford. The main sites are around 200 homes in the Mead Lane area, including the former gas works site, around 550 west of the town, north of Welwyn Road and west of Thieves Lane, around 150 to the north off Sacombe Road and Wadesmill Road, and around 50 west of Mangrove Road.

New homes are often built with good insulation and large windows, so upstairs rooms can get warm in summer. Some estates carry planning conditions or covenants about external equipment, so we read them with you before choosing a position.

Hertford businesses and parking

We fit and service systems in offices, shops, cafes, clinics and salons in the town centre and on business sites around the town. Shops in the conservation area need extra care with the outdoor unit, so siting and any paperwork come first. Commercial installs are done in business hours, and we repair and regas most brands, whoever fitted them.

East Herts runs four resident permit zones in Hertford: H1 on Folly Island, H2 on Chambers Street, H3 around Railway Place, Mead Lane and Marshgate Drive, and H4 on part of Stanstead Road. If you live in one, tell us when you book so we can plan where the van parks.

Hertford questions

Do I need planning permission for air conditioning in Hertford?

Often not. A heating-capable unit on a house can be permitted development if it meets the size, position and noise limits. You need permission for a cooling-only unit, a listed building, or a unit on a road-facing wall inside the conservation area. Applications go to East Herts Council.

I live in a Victorian terrace in Bengeo. Where would the outdoor unit go?

Usually on the back wall or on a pad in the garden, with a short pipe run through the rear room. Many Bengeo streets, such as Port Vale and Parkhurst Road, are inside the conservation area, so the front wall is off limits without permission. A rear position avoids that.

Can you install air conditioning on Folly Island?

Yes, with some planning. The houses are in the conservation area, the streets are narrow and the area is permit zone H1, so we agree the outdoor unit's position and where the van can park before we book. Rear walls and yards are the usual places for the unit.

How much does air conditioning cost for a Hertford house?

A single bedroom or study starts from £1,850 including VAT, with a 5 m pipe run. A living room unit starts from £2,050. Two rooms on one outdoor unit start from £3,650 and three rooms from £5,100. The survey turns this into a fixed written price.

Do you repair air conditioning someone else fitted?

Yes. We repair most brands, whoever installed them. We confirm the cost of the repair visit when you book, and the repair itself is priced in writing before any work starts. If the system is low on refrigerant, we find and fix the leak before any regas.

Do you work with Hertford offices and shops?

Yes. We fit wall units and ceiling cassettes, service existing systems and offer maintenance contracts. Commercial wall units start from £1,795 plus VAT. For a shop in the conservation area, we sort out the outdoor unit's position and any planning first.
