Air conditioning in Kings Langley and Abbots Langley
We install, service and repair air conditioning in Kings Langley, Abbots Langley and the villages around them. The two places sit either side of a council boundary, so the first thing we check is which council handles your planning.

Of 63,413 households in the 2021 Census, 76 in 100 lived in a house (21 detached, 25 semi-detached, 30 terraced) and 23 in 100 in a flat. Most installs here are on houses, where a back or side wall is usually the simplest place for the outdoor unit.
In a conservation area an outdoor unit can't go on a wall or roof facing a road without planning permission, and an Article 4 direction can remove permitted development rights altogether. Check your postcode to see whether either applies to your street.

Two villages, two councils
Kings Langley village and its High Street are in Dacorum. Abbots Langley, Bedmond, Hunton Bridge and the Three Rivers part of Leavesden are in Three Rivers District. The boundary runs between the High Street and the station, so it can surprise people.
Kings Langley station is a good example. Three Rivers' appraisal of Abbots Langley says the station, which opened in 1839 and was called Kings Langley and Abbots Langley until 1974, is in Abbots Langley parish. So is the former Ovaltine factory on Station Road: Three Rivers approved 367 homes there in 2004 and asked the developer to keep the art deco front, which isn't listed.
Which council handles your planning
| Where you live | Council | Conservation area |
|---|---|---|
| Kings Langley High Street and village | Dacorum Borough Council | Kings Langley, designated 1969 |
| Chipperfield | Dacorum Borough Council | Chipperfield |
| Abbots Langley village | Three Rivers District Council | Abbots Langley, designated 1969 |
| Hunton Bridge | Three Rivers District Council | Hunton Bridge, designated 1984 |
| Station Road, Ovaltine Court and the station area | Three Rivers District Council | Check the council's map |
| Bedmond and Leavesden (Three Rivers part) | Three Rivers District Council | Check the council's map |
Your council tax bill shows which council you're in. Part of Leavesden is in Watford Borough instead.
Planning rules for an outdoor unit
Both councils use the same national rules. A heating-capable outdoor unit on a house is often permitted development if it is not used only for cooling, is no bigger than 1.5 m³ and passes the MCS 020(a) noise check of 37 dB(A) at neighbours' windows. A semi-detached or terraced house can have one heat pump, a detached house two. In a conservation area, the unit can't go on a wall or roof facing the road without permission.
Dacorum's Kings Langley conservation area was designated in October 1969 and amended in 1975. When we checked in October 2026 the council listed no Article 4 directions for it. The village has many listed buildings along the High Street, including All Saints Church and Langley House, both Grade II*, and the sites of the royal palace and the Dominican priory are scheduled monuments. Listed buildings always need consent.
Abbots Langley, Bedmond and Hunton Bridge
Three Rivers designated the Abbots Langley conservation area in October 1969, around the Grade I Church of St Lawrence. The council's 2014 appraisal notes that Nicholas Breakspear, the only English pope, is thought to have been born near Bedmond. The village grew after the railway arrived, then quickly from the 1920s.
Leavesden's asylum opened in 1870 and the hospital site was rebuilt as housing after it closed in the 1990s. Hunton Bridge's conservation area, designated in 1984 and extended in 1990, grew up around the canal and is split by the A41.
Local homes and what they mean for an install
| Type of home | Where | What it means for the install |
|---|---|---|
| Period cottages and townhouses | Kings Langley High Street, Abbots Langley High Street, Hunton Bridge | Often listed or in a conservation area. A rear unit with hidden pipework, after any consent is in place. |
| Interwar and post-war semis | Across both villages and Bedmond | Usually permitted development. A multi-split cools two to four rooms from one outdoor unit. |
| Canal-side flats | Ovaltine Court and the newer blocks by the canal | Freeholder or managing agent consent first. Leases often control what goes on walls and balconies, so we check yours. |
| Newer estates | The former Leavesden Hospital site and edge-of-village schemes | Simple installs in well-insulated homes. Check planning conditions and covenants about external equipment. |
Air conditioning for local businesses
We fit and service systems for offices, shops, pubs, clinics and light industrial units, including light industrial units near the canal. Wall units suit small shops and offices. Ceiling cassettes suit offices with suspended ceilings. Commercial installs are done in business hours, and we can take over servicing from another installer and keep your F-Gas records up to date.

Kings Langley questions
Do I need planning permission for air conditioning in Kings Langley?
Often not, if the unit also heats and meets the size, position and noise limits. You need permission for a listed building, a cooling-only unit, or a unit facing the road in a conservation area. The village is in Dacorum, but the station side and Abbots Langley are in Three Rivers, so check which council is yours.
Can I have air conditioning in an Ovaltine Court flat?
Often, with the freeholder's or managing agent's written consent first. Permitted development allows one heat pump per block of flats, so a planning application may be needed if the block already has one. Three Rivers handles planning there. We check the lease and the building before quoting.
Are you an air conditioning company that covers Abbots Langley too?
Yes. We install, service and repair air conditioning in Abbots Langley, Bedmond, Hunton Bridge and Leavesden as well as Kings Langley. Planning there goes to Three Rivers District Council.
How much does it cost to cool two bedrooms?
Two rooms on one outdoor unit start from £3,650 including VAT, and three rooms from £5,100. A single bedroom starts from £1,850 with a 5 m pipe run. The survey gives you a fixed written price.
Do you service air conditioning for local businesses?
Yes. We service offices, shops and units, keep F-Gas records for systems that need them, and offer maintenance contracts for one site or several. If you need a new system, commercial wall units start from £1,795 plus VAT and ceiling cassettes from £2,750 plus VAT.
Can you repair a system another company fitted?
Yes. We repair most brands, whoever fitted them. We confirm the cost of the repair visit when you book, and the repair itself is priced in writing before any work starts.
