Air conditioning in Cranfield

We install, service and repair air conditioning in Cranfield, from the High Street and the new estates to Wharley End and Bourne End. Cranfield has no conservation area and mostly modern homes, so most installs are simple. Here's what does need checking, and how the village's growth shapes an install.

Of 120,755 households in the 2021 Census, 86 in 100 lived in a house (29 detached, 34 semi-detached, 23 terraced) and 12 in 100 in a flat. Most installs here are on houses, where a back or side wall is usually the simplest place for the outdoor unit.

In a conservation area an outdoor unit can't go on a wall or roof facing a road without planning permission, and an Article 4 direction can remove permitted development rights altogether. Check your postcode to see whether either applies to your street.

From an airfield village to a university village

The parish council's history traces Cranfield back to 918, when a manor here was granted to the monks of Ramsey Abbey. The Church of St Peter and St Paul dates from the 12th century and is listed Grade I. For centuries this was a farming and lace-making parish, and its population fell to 1,059 by 1921.

Then the airfield came. RAF Cranfield opened on the north-west side of the village in 1937, and after the war the site became the College of Aeronautics, which took its first students in 1946 and grew into Cranfield University. The airfield is still in use.

The other turning point was mains sewerage in 1962. The parish council says the population has more than doubled since then. The 2021 Census counted 7,284 people in the parish, up from 5,369 in 2011, an increase of more than a third in ten years.

Cranfield homes and what they mean for an install

At the 2021 Census, the Cranfield and Marston Moretaine ward had 37% detached homes, 36% semi-detached, 22% terraced and 4% purpose-built flats.

Planning: Central Bedfordshire Council

Cranfield has a parish council, but planning applications go to Central Bedfordshire Council. A heating-capable outdoor unit on a house is often permitted development if it isn't used only for cooling, is no bigger than 1.5 m³ and passes the MCS 020(a) noise check of 37 dB(A) at the neighbour's window. A semi-detached or terraced house can have one, a detached house two.

Cranfield isn't on the council's list of conservation areas, and we found no Article 4 direction covering the village. So the usual limits apply: no unit on a wall facing the road above the ground floor. Listed buildings always need listed building consent. Our planning guide explains each rule.

New homes still coming

Central Bedfordshire's Local Plan includes two more housing sites in Cranfield: 48 homes at East End Farm and 15 on land west of Lodge Road. If you're buying a new home in the village, read the planning conditions for your site before planning an outdoor unit. Some new estates have conditions or covenants that need the developer's or estate company's consent.

New homes are airtight and well insulated, which is good in winter but holds the heat in upstairs bedrooms through a hot spell. Every system we fit heats as well as cools, so a bedroom unit earns its keep all year.

Wharley End, Bourne End and the villages nearby

We cover the whole parish and the villages around it. Most are in Central Bedfordshire:

  • Wharley End: the north-west of the parish, next to the university and the technology park
  • Bourne End: the hamlet to the north of the village
  • Hulcote, Salford and Brogborough: smaller villages to the south
  • Marston Moretaine: to the east, with its own page
  • Wootton: north-east over the boundary in Bedford Borough, with its own page

Air conditioning for Cranfield businesses

The parish council notes that the Nissan Technical Centre Europe and other companies have joined the university on the technology park at Wharley End. We fit and service systems in offices, meeting rooms, labs and small server rooms there and around the airfield, as well as in the village's shops, cafes, surgeries and nurseries.

Ceiling cassettes suit offices with suspended ceilings. Server and comms rooms need cooling all year, so we size them for the heat the equipment gives off. Commercial installs are done in business hours, and we offer maintenance contracts with F-Gas records for one site or several.

Cranfield questions

Do I need planning permission for air conditioning in Cranfield?

Usually not, for a heating-capable unit on a house that meets the size, position and noise limits. Cranfield has no conservation area on the council's list, so the main thing to avoid is a unit on a road-facing wall above the ground floor. Listed buildings and cooling-only units need permission. Applications go to Central Bedfordshire Council.

I've bought a new-build house in Cranfield. What should I check first?

Look up the planning permission for your development on Central Bedfordshire's planning website and read the conditions, then check your deeds for covenants. Some new estates need the developer's or management company's consent for anything fixed to an outside wall. We go through it with you at the survey.

How much does it cost to cool the bedrooms in a family house?

One bedroom starts from £1,850 including VAT, with a 5 m pipe run. Two rooms on one outdoor unit start from £3,650 and three from £5,100. We size each room at the survey, because a loft bedroom or a south-facing room may need more than a standard unit.

Can you fit air conditioning in an office or server room on the technology park?

Yes. We fit wall units and ceiling cassettes in offices, and dedicated cooling for server and comms rooms. A commercial wall unit starts from £1,795 plus VAT and a ceiling cassette from £2,750 plus VAT. Work is done in business hours, and we can take on servicing and F-Gas checks afterwards.

I rent out a house in Cranfield. Can you service the system between tenants?

Yes. An annual service starts from £119 including VAT, plus £59 for each extra indoor unit on the same visit, and you get a written record for your files. We repair most brands too; the cost of the repair visit is confirmed when you book.

Do you cover Wharley End, Bourne End and Hulcote?

Yes. Wharley End and Bourne End are on the edges of Cranfield and Hulcote is just to the south, all in Central Bedfordshire. None is on the council's list of conservation areas, but some older houses are listed, so we check your address before we quote. Surveys are booked at least a week ahead.
