Air conditioning in Farnham
We install, service and repair air conditioning in Farnham and the villages around it, from Wrecclesham to Frensham and Tilford. Farnham's old town centre is a conservation area full of Georgian fronts and listed buildings, so the position of the outdoor unit matters.

Planning in Farnham, now and from April 2027
Waverley Borough Council handles planning applications in Farnham until 31 March 2027. Farnham Town Council comments on applications, but Waverley decides them. From 1 April 2027, Waverley becomes part of the new West Surrey Council, with Guildford, Runnymede, Spelthorne, Surrey Heath and Woking, and applications go there instead.
A unit that heats as well as cools can often go on a house without a planning application, under national permitted development rules, within limits on size, position and noise. Those rights don't cover listed buildings, and in a conservation area the unit can't go on a wall or roof facing the road.
Farnham Town Centre Conservation Area
The town centre was designated a conservation area in 1970 and extended in 1979. Waverley's appraisal describes a medieval street pattern, many older buildings with later fronts, and fine Georgian houses, with the Castle, the Maltings and St Andrew's as its best-known buildings. The appraisal was adopted in 2005 and a management plan followed in 2012.
Some buildings here are listed, so check the National Heritage List before anything else. For an unlisted house, the outdoor unit goes at the back, out of view from the street. Rear yards and courtyards behind the main streets often work well.

Farnham homes and how we approach them
| Type of home | Typical areas | How we approach it |
|---|---|---|
| Georgian and older town houses | Castle Street and the old town centre | In the conservation area and some are listed. Check consent first, then use a hidden rear position. |
| Victorian and Edwardian houses | Roads close to the town centre | Check the conservation area map. A short pipe run to a rear wall keeps the cost down. |
| Larger detached houses | Great Austins and the edges of town | Great Austins is a conservation area. A ground-mounted unit at the side or back, screened by planting, works well. |
| Village houses and cottages | Wrecclesham, Frensham, Tilford | Several village centres are conservation areas. Check for listing, then screen the unit with planting. |
| Modern family homes | Newer estates around the town | Usually permitted development. A multi-split can cool the bedrooms from one outdoor unit. |
The Surrey Hills
The Surrey Hills National Landscape reaches into the countryside around Farnham. Natural England has proposed adding more land, including the Wey Valley at Farnham and the Dockenfield Hills. It sent the order to the Secretary of State on 7 September 2026, and no decision had been made when we last checked.
A National Landscape doesn't ban air conditioning. The council will look closely at anything visible from the countryside, so the outdoor unit should sit low and out of view.
Farnham businesses and parking
We fit and service air conditioning in shops, cafes, offices, salons and studios in the town centre, where siting and consent come first in older buildings. We also work on industrial units. Commercial installs are done in business hours, and we take over servicing of existing systems from most manufacturers.
Surrey County Council runs on-street parking in Farnham, including suspensions and waivers through its Surrey Permit site. If your street has permit bays or yellow lines, tell us when you book.

Farnham questions
Who do I apply to for planning permission in Farnham?
Waverley Borough Council until 31 March 2027. From 1 April 2027, the new West Surrey Council handles planning for Farnham. Farnham Town Council is consulted but doesn't decide applications.
Can I have air conditioning in a listed building in Castle Street?
Possibly, but you'll need listed building consent and usually planning permission first. Permitted development doesn't apply to listed buildings. A floor-standing indoor unit and a hidden outdoor unit at the back is often the most sympathetic answer.
I live in Great Austins. Is my house in a conservation area?
Great Austins is one of Waverley's conservation areas, with an appraisal adopted in 2022. Check your address on the council's map. If you're inside it, put the outdoor unit at the back or side, away from the road.
Can air conditioning heat my home in winter?
Yes. The systems we fit are heat pumps that heat as well as cool. That matters for planning too, because a cooling-only unit can't use permitted development.
Which system suits a large house near Frensham or Tilford?
A multi-split cools three rooms from one outdoor unit, from £5,100. If you're renovating and have loft or ceiling space, ducted air conditioning hides everything except small grilles, from £4,950 per zone.
