Planning in Slough

Slough Borough Council handles planning applications across the borough, including Langley, Cippenham, Britwell, Wexham and Colnbrook. The council is preparing a new Local Plan to 2045.

Not every Slough postcode is in Slough borough. Burnham, Farnham Common and Stoke Poges have SL1 and SL2 postcodes but sit in Buckinghamshire, where Buckinghamshire Council handles planning. Datchet has an SL3 postcode but is in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead.

For most houses, a unit that heats as well as cools can go in without an application under national permitted development rules, within limits on size, position and noise. Our planning guide covers them, and we check your address before we quote.

Slough's five conservation areas

Slough has fewer conservation areas than its neighbours. Most were designated in 1977, and St Bernard's School followed in 1984. In 2026 the council consulted on updated appraisals and management plans for all five.

In a conservation area the outdoor unit can't go on a wall or roof facing the road without planning permission. A unit at the back or side, out of view, is usually the answer.

Air conditioning for Slough businesses

Slough is a business town. The council describes the Slough Trading Estate, owned by SEGRO since 1920, as the largest industrial estate in single ownership in Europe. Around it are offices, warehouses and data centres, plus the shops and restaurants of the town centre.

We fit wall units and ceiling cassettes in offices, showrooms and trade counters, and dedicated cooling for server and comms rooms. Commercial installs are done in business hours. For sites with several systems, a maintenance contract keeps servicing and F-Gas leak checks on schedule.

Slough questions

Do I need planning permission for air conditioning in Slough?

Not usually for a house, if the unit heats as well as cools and meets the permitted development limits on size, position and noise. Listed buildings, flats and fronts of houses in conservation areas usually need permission. Ask Slough Borough Council if you're unsure.

My postcode is SL2 but I live in Stoke Poges. Which council do I ask?

Buckinghamshire Council. Stoke Poges, Farnham Common and Burnham have Slough postcodes but are in Buckinghamshire. The permitted development rules are the same national rules.

Is Langley part of Slough for planning?

Yes. Langley and Colnbrook are both in Slough borough, so planning goes to Slough Borough Council. St Mary's Church, Langley, and Colnbrook are two of the borough's five conservation areas, so check whether your street is inside one.

Can I cool two bedrooms with one outdoor unit?

Yes. A two-room multi-split starts at £3,650 including VAT. On a semi or terraced house it also keeps you within the permitted development limit of one heat pump per house.

We have units on the trading estate. Can you take over the servicing?

Yes. We service most brands, keep F-Gas records and can set up a maintenance contract across several units or sites. Send us the makes, models and number of units and we'll quote.

Do you fit air conditioning in flats near Slough station?

Yes, with the freeholder's consent. A block of flats can have one heat pump under permitted development, with an outdoor unit up to 0.6 m³. A second one needs planning permission.
