Air conditioning in Hounslow

We install, service and repair air conditioning for homes and businesses across the London Borough of Hounslow, from Chiswick, Brentford and Isleworth to Hounslow, Heston, Cranford, Feltham and Bedfont. Here's how the borough's homes, Heathrow and the council's rules shape an install.

Victorian Chiswick, interwar west

Hounslow's housing changes as you travel west. The Local Plan describes Chiswick's much-loved Victorian and Edwardian townscape of two and three storey terraces. In a terrace, the outdoor unit usually goes at the back, on the ground or on the back-addition wall, with pipes routed through the rear rooms.

Further west, the plan describes swathes of interwar and post-war housing in Cranford and Heston, and interwar and post-war estates in Isleworth. In the 2021 Census, 29 per cent of Hounslow households lived in a semi-detached house, against 19 per cent across London. A semi usually has a side wall or rear wall where one outdoor unit can run a multi-split, cooling three or four rooms.

Flats matter too: 37 per cent of households live in a purpose-built block. In a flat, you need the freeholder's consent first, and national rules allow only one heat pump per block as permitted development.

Heathrow, noise and closed windows

The Local Plan names aircraft arriving and departing Heathrow as the main source of noise in the borough, with particular concern in the west. Many homes under the flight paths keep windows shut on summer nights. A heat pump air conditioner cools a bedroom with the windows closed, and heats it in winter too.

Heathrow runs a Residential Insulation Scheme for homes inside a noise boundary it sets, with a postcode checker on its website. It can fund new windows, doors and acoustically rated ventilation, but Heathrow's pages don't mention cooling. If you've had insulation work done, we plan pipe routes around the new windows and vents.

The council is strict about plant noise. Local Plan Policy EQ5 asks for new plant and machinery to run at least 10 dB below the background noise level at neighbouring homes. We choose quiet outdoor units, keep them away from neighbours' windows and fit anti-vibration mounts.

Planning, Bedford Park and Gunnersbury

Planning questions go to Hounslow Council. The adopted plan is the Hounslow Local Plan 2015 to 2030. A new Local Plan for 2020 to 2041 was submitted in June 2025 and is still being examined, so check with the council if a policy matters to your project.

For an unlisted house, a unit that heats as well as cools can often go in without planning permission under the national rules, if it meets the size, position and noise limits. Cooling-only units, listed buildings and walls facing the road in a conservation area need permission.

The council's website lists 29 conservation areas. Two, Bedford Park and Gunnersbury Park, have Article 4 directions that remove more permitted development rights. Hounslow's appraisal calls Bedford Park, begun in 1875, probably the best-known and best-preserved later Victorian suburb in outer London. If you live in either, check with the council before planning any outdoor unit.

Offices, shops and industrial units

The Local Plan names Hounslow as a metropolitan centre, Chiswick as a major centre, and Brentford and Feltham as district centres. We fit wall units and ceiling cassettes in shops and offices there, in business hours, and service and repair existing systems.

The Great West Road's 'Golden Mile', Chiswick Business Park and Bedfont Lakes are home to large offices. North Feltham Trading Estate and Transport Avenue in Brentford are strategic industrial locations, where units often need cooling for offices, server rooms or staff areas. We size each system from the heat load, not just the floor area.

Parking and access for engineers

A council parking strategy says controlled parking zones cover over a third of the borough, mainly in Brentford, Chiswick, Hounslow and Isleworth. Entry boards show each zone's hours.

Where we need a clear bay for building work, Hounslow charges £25 per space per day plus a £40 admin fee, with at least ten working days' notice. Where there's no bay nearby, the council can allow a vehicle on a yellow line for £65 for the first day. We apply and show the fee on your quote.

Hounslow is outside the Congestion Charge zone. TfL's ULEZ covers all London boroughs, including Hounslow.

Hounslow questions

Do I need planning permission for air conditioning in Hounslow?

Often not for a house. A heating-capable unit on an unlisted house can usually go in under national permitted development rules if it meets the size, position and noise limits. Cooling-only units, listed buildings and street-facing walls in conservation areas need permission. In Bedford Park and Gunnersbury Park, check with Hounslow Council first because of their Article 4 directions.

Can I have air conditioning in Bedford Park?

Often yes, but plan on asking the council first. The Article 4 direction covers every property in Hounslow's part of Bedford Park. We pick a position at the back, away from the street, choose a quiet unit and give you the drawings and noise data for any application.

Will air conditioning help with aircraft noise near Heathrow?

It lets you keep the windows shut on hot nights and stay cool, which many households under the flight paths want. It isn't sound insulation. For that, check whether your home is eligible for Heathrow's Residential Insulation Scheme using its postcode checker.

Can one outdoor unit cool several bedrooms in a Feltham or Heston semi?

Yes. A multi-split runs two to four indoor units from one outdoor unit, usually at the side or back of the house. Two rooms start from £3,650 inc. VAT and three from £5,100 inc. VAT.

Will I pay for parking during the install?

Only if the street is controlled and the job needs a suspended bay. Hounslow charges £25 per space per day plus a £40 admin fee, with ten working days' notice. We show the council's fee on your quote before you agree to it.

Do you service and repair air conditioning in Hounslow?

Yes, for homes and businesses, including Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, LG and Panasonic systems. An annual service starts from £119 inc. VAT. Repairs start with a diagnostic visit from £125 inc. VAT, deducted if you go ahead with the repair.
